What LHS is Reading #3

Our brilliant history teacher, Ms. B., tells us about a book that has her super excited! Thanks Ms. B.!

I just finished Midnight at the Pera Palace, which is all about the birth of modern day Turkey. I did not select it, but am part of a World History educators book group, so it was chosen for us. I LOVED it! It taught me so much about a place that I didn’t know much about beforehand. It discussed all different parts of Turkey’s complex history and even though it was non-fiction, it was easy to read and a page turner. My favorite part of the book had to do with Istanbul’s complex network of spies during WWII, the early women’s rights movement, and the descriptions of how Mustafa Kemal created a Turkish group where before there wasn’t one. I would definitely recommend this book to history buffs.

Great review, Ms. B! I’m a history buff, too, and I like that you’re in a WH educators book group (in your huge amounts of free time outside of teaching). Might check out the book!

Hi Ms. B, I used to be in a book group like the one you’ve described. Sometimes I liked the way they would pick books for me so that I could learn about new, great stories. It is hard to find good books sometimes without a trusted friend to make recommendations. I’m going to look for Pera Palace. Thanks for the recommendation.
